In 1997, the University Museum was opened in the building. Uppsala Castle Building started on Uppsala Slott (Uppsala Castle) in 1549 during the reign of Swedish King Gustav Vasa who intended it as a fortress. His home and studio where he lived and worked with his family for the last twenty-five years of his life was turned into a museum in 1978.
